Why tune-ups matter here
An air conditioner in Central Texas works hard for months at a time. Dirty coils, a weak capacitor or a partly clogged drain line make it work harder and fail sooner. Most manufacturers also recommend routine professional maintenance.
What a typical tune-up covers
A general seasonal check looks at:
- Thermostat operation and settings
- Electrical connections, capacitors and contactors
- Refrigerant pressures and temperatures (cooling)
- Outdoor coil condition and cleaning as needed
- Condensate drain and pan
- Blower operation and airflow
- Burners, ignition and venting (gas heat), or heat strips (electric heat)
- Air filter condition

Frequently asked questions
How often should I service my AC?
At least once a year, ideally in spring before the heat arrives. Many homeowners schedule a second visit in fall for the heating side.
How often should I change my air filter?
It depends on the filter and the household. Check it monthly in summer and replace it when it looks dirty. Homes with pets or dust may need changes every month or two.
Can I clean my outdoor unit myself?
You can keep plants trimmed back about two feet and gently rinse loose debris off the coil with a garden hose with the power off. Avoid pressure washers, which can bend the fins.
